Are you over 17?: Considerably.
Characters in Forest Covered: N/A

( CHARACTER INFORMATION )

Name/Work Name: Sawatari Makoto (Koharu)
Canon: Kanon (2006, specifically)
Canon Point: After being derailed very quickly into her canon (as in, just after she sees Yuuichi upon becoming human, but before confronting him), then spending over a year and a half living off-world.
AU/CRAU: CRAU
Age: Vague in canon, but estimated around 15-18 (the ages of all the other haremettes; the hero and winning girl are 17). Has spent over a year out-of-story.
History: First of all, let's lay down the spoilers. Makoto appears to be a normal teenage girl who's completely lost her memory, and that's what she thinks of herself as well. In truth, her amnesia is half of the price she's paid to make a wish come true, with the other half, her life, being paid once that wish is completed. She will slowly begin to lose her humanity -- speech, motor skills, and all, until she's at the intellectual level of an animal, and then fade from existence.

Because she is an animal. The foxes of Monomi Hill are the subject of a local legend, though the details have been forgotten by many. A fox can become a human if it has a wish, but must forget everything and live their life as a normal human with only a vague idea of what their wish actually was, and then degenerate and die when it's accomplished. This fox had a wish, which she made when she saw a seventeen-year-old boy who was new in town being shown around the area. She immediately recognized him as Aizawa Yuuichi, the child who took her in and secretly took care of her seven years previously. One day in spring, he took her out to the hill and let her play around for a while, but the next thing she knew, the kid was running away, not even giving a reason for abandoning her. ...needless to say, she was a little upset by this. The fox, Makoto (named after Yuuichi's childhood crush, Sawatari Makoto), wished with all her being to see him again and, we're supposed to presume, extract her revenge.

Which she tries to do as best she can. Unfortunately, Makoto is a walking failbucket.

(At this point, Makoto's canon was derailed in-game.)

When she first corners him with a declaration of war despite having no idea who he is or why she has this feeling that she hates him, she slips on a patch of ice and knocks herself out, and he drags her home to see what his aunt will do about it; to his chagrin and her utter joy, Makoto is allowed to live with the family. She then attempts a number of pranks on him, from raiding the fridge to dropping konnyaku down his back to cutting his hair off in his sleep to setting firecrackers off in his room, and he dramatically gets the best of her every time. He makes the best of it and ends up in a prank war with her, and he almost always manages to win (walking in on her in the bath specifically to freak her out, for example, or sending her to buy him porn from the corner store when she doesn't know what it is), but Aunt Akiko's word is law and they will have a peaceful and harmonious household whether they like it or not.

Slowly, though she still resents Yuuichi, Makoto does grow to care about him, if reluctantly. She also forms bonds with others around her, like Yuuichi's aunt Akiko, his cousin Nayuki, and the obvious winning haremette, Ayu. Around this time, a strange girl who never smiles shows up and starts warning Yuuichi not to get close to Makoto or he'll get hurt. He brushes off the warnings, but even if the girl didn't approach Makoto herself, Makoto starts acting strangely. She befriends a stray cat, but starts to mumble to herself that maybe animals shouldn't be close to humans, because humans will only abandon them in the end. When Yuuichi says that's not true, she promptly drops the cat off a bridge. I repeat. She DROPS THE CAT OFF A BRIDGE ONTO MOVING TRAFFIC. Yuuichi rightfully asks what on earth is wrong with Makoto, and she discovers that the cat fortuitously landed on a semi and survived, at which point she runs away from home to go find it. When Yuuichi finds Makoto, she's sleeping curled up with the cat on top of Monomi Hill, which for some reason looks and feels like spring when the entire rest of the town has ten centimetres of snow and is minus twenty with the wind chill.

Makoto later takes the cat home and names it Piro, and the two are rarely seen apart; as her life goes on in a whirl of discovering the amazing things the world has to offer (meat buns and shoujo manga), she gets closer to everyone else as well. Mysterious Lineface Girl is not happy. Actually, I'm going to just call her Mishio because that's her name and it's easier. Mishio presses Yuuichi to ditch Makoto and he refuses and he starts to remember stuff but that's not important because this is Makoto's history section. When Yuuichi learns just what Makoto is and what's going to happen to her, he tries his best to save her; he tells her to try to keep blocking out her past when she starts to remember the day he ditched her on the hill, and he keeps reminding her of human things she likes.

As fated, she starts to decline. She forgets how to brush her teeth and dress herself. She stops trying to prank Yuuichi and instead becomes more straightforwardly affectionate, snuggling on him and crawling into his bed without asking. She starts to talk about her dreams, and it becomes clear that even if she was angry when she made the wish, she didn't really want to hurt Yuuichi. She just wanted to see him and play with him again. One day, she dozes off reading shoujo manga and tells Yuuichi in a half-aware state that she wants to marry him. Soon, her verbal tic, "auu", becomes the only thing she knows how to say.

Yuuichi asks Mishio for help and she finally concedes to see her and be her friend, but says there's no real way to save Makoto, at least not without a miracle. The only thing to do is to make sure she's happy. He and his family work hard to this end, letting her stay home and do whatever she wants, then taking her out for supper and taking a picture in a print club booth like she always wanted to do with other people. Yuuichi finally gets the idea to do one more thing. He takes Makoto out to Monomi Hill, pins a homemade veil onto her head (you think a high school student can afford a bridal gown?), and asks her to "get married". He then promptly performs a wedding for the two of them right then and there to the best of his ability, which admittedly means he won't be officiating anything any time soon, and even though it isn't exactly what she wanted and Makoto gets upset, she's still happy that Yuuichi did this for her. They then sit on the hill, Yuuichi talking to her and Makoto only able to say "auu" and play with a jingling bell on a string until she disappears and Monomi Hill returns to winter.

And then since I'm taking her from the 2006 anime, it's implied in the epilogue that Ayu wished Makoto back to life when she saved all the other girls in the harem to make Yuuichi happy. Though Makoto's still a fox. Well, could be worse.

Personality: What do you mean, I can't just put "tsun tsun dere dere"?

Makoto is often described as selfish and childish, and while much of this comes from Yuuichi's biased narration, that doesn't make it any less true. Her priorities are restoring her memory, getting her revenge, and having fun every day doing whatever she wants. She finds a job after being pressured to do so for the purpose of making her more responsible, but she quits within days because she isn't allowed to bring her cat. She also feels no remorse for spending the grocery money on meat buns and shoujo manga, all for herself, until she's warned that she might get punished for it. It makes sense when you realize her backstory, though; she's an animal. She didn't have responsibilities before, and she had to do things for herself just to live.

At the same time, she does care about people. She starts to see Akiko as her mother, especially later on, and nervously accepts Ayu as a friend. As much as she hates him, or says she does, her relationship with Yuuichi shows most strongly that she cares about people. (Again, tsun tsun dere dere.) Her pranks start with an honest desire for revenge and eventually just become a way that they both have fun getting back at each other before stopping completely. She ends up somewhere between "pet" and "would-be girlfriend" because those are the two pieces of what she was; she was an animal he hid in the shed and took care of, but he named her after his crush. Her empathy also shows strongly with Piro, her cat, in canon -- and, though she doesn't have Piro in this CRAU, she does have a robotic kitten Jin built when he had temporarily regained his body and promptly got absolutely drunk. She dotes on the cat and loves him very much, and if something happens to him she'll do anything to get him back.

This shows that Makoto, selfish as she is, can learn as well. Dropping Piro off a bridge when they first met was, to her, a "kindness" because she started to remember her own abandonment and didn't want the cat going through that, but after she's called out, it really gets to her and she works as hard as she can to get him back; she learns from this, and from that day on, she takes care of Piro like it was her life's duty. She progresses from flat-out tsundere to being more honest with herself and others, too.

Even if it isn't obvious to her, Makoto's mannerisms do betray the fact that she is an animal. She doesn't even recognize how often she says "auu", or that she says it at all. She licks her wrist, plays with bells because she likes the sound, and eats ravenously like she doesn't know when her next meal is coming. Occasionally her repressed memories will push back and try to return, as well, as her "quest for revenge" goes on. If someone shows affection to her, she'll at least be tempted to do the same in return, and she's innocent to an extent and very gullible. (See: being tricked into going to buy porn.)

Auu.

Debt: Makoto wants to be able to live even if she gets her wish (she still doesn't know what it was) or, conversely, if she never does.
Suitability: Makoto will try her best, but will complain a lot and probably try to go on strike at least once. But in the end, she'll do what she can to not die, because then maybe she can help her family.

Previous Game Info: Just like in canon, Makoto appeared as a human with no name and no memory. She wandered down the hill into town and then spent a day trying to figure things out, sleeping in the park, picking up money only to waste it all in the purikura machine because she saw other girls doing it and she thought that was just what you did, and being extremely hungry. Since I'm taking her as a DDD game import, this was also when she ended up in an electronics store and connected to a magical Internet community. She met a variety of people who were concerned about her well-being and the fact that she knew basically nothing (what's Y2K?). Before she was able to stalk and confront Yuuichi, she met a robot who took pity on her, fed her, and took her back to the Energy Management Centre in the World Without Riders, meaning the Super Sentai/Pretty Cure all-official-crossovers-compliant universe.

Makoto promptly ended up adopted by the cast of Tokumei Sentai Go-Busters. Lest you assume that her antics might not be as bad without a Yuuichi to rage against, rest assured that with a rowdy genius projecting his body from space and a robot with the brains of a bag of ham as semi-legal guardians, not to mention with one or two bizarre events affecting the multiverse every month, Makoto's weird acts only got worse. She discovered HTML and sparkle text, declared herself queen of everything, photocopied her face, made a wish for meat buns to rain from the sky, and all manner of other things, and was encouraged just as much as she was chastised. Makoto was basically given the perfect environment in which to continue being Makoto.

Even so, she did change somewhat. She's taken part in a few big and small battles in her adopted canon, wearing a cheap costume and using "weapons" from the hundred-yen store, because she thinks being a Ranger would be the coolest thing. Thanks to a prying, fourth-wall-happy, in-denial-about-possibly-reforming-a-little-just-because-he-saved-the-universe-once-out-of-spite Kefka, Makoto learned that she hadn't always been the way she was, she had been something else for a wish, and if she either fulfilled that wish or gave up on it, she was going to die. Or something. Cue the flailing panic of "I don't wanna die! How do I not die?". She's been wracked by this wish ever since, even though staying off-world from her original home has so far kept her safe. Makoto's constant worries are twofold: the possibility of Jin's canon death (being a surrogate parent to her will do that) and what wish she could possibly have made, obviously didn't get, but would have killed her.

And that's about it. She was digging holes in the ground when she first arrived here.

Inventory:
-Basic outfit (the jean jacket, sweater, skirt, kneesocks, hair ribbons, and boots that compose her iconic outfit)
-Cheap costume (Makoto's attempt at a Go-Buster uniform involves a random labcoat, someone's leather jacket, the tackiest sunglasses you've ever seen (scuffed from her dramatically throwing them to the side), winter gloves, and hiking boots. She thinks it looks great.)
-Robotic cat. It's got a simple AI and is basically a terrible troll to anyone not Makoto.
-Meat buns (that will probably be expired and gross by the time she gets them back)
-Sappy shoujo manga
-A bunch of K'nex sets all jumbled together

Abilities, Strengths, and Weaknesses:

Abilities: Makoto does not have any magical powers. Her only special innate ability as a fox was to transform into a human if she had a wish and was willing to give up her memory and life. As she's already done all this (aside from the dying part), there's nothing she can do that isn't out of the ordinary. (The preservation of springtime in Monomi Hill is related to Makoto, but it's not something she can really do, and it wouldn't come up in-game anyway.)

Strengths:
-Despite her tsundere, irresponsible personality, Makoto can also be very affectionate and endearing, and she has a tendency to have people decide that they want to look out for her.
-Makoto really loves the people who have taken her in as family and is willing to fight for them, even if she can't really do much.
-Though she'll complain and be miserable, Makoto can live out in the wilderness or on the streets.
-Makoto has been given basic combat training, though mainly enough to get out of the way of fights or temporarily defend herself against an ordinary person. It's still a lot better than the flailing and falling over she did in canon.
-Makoto knows how to drive a zord. I doubt this will ever come up, however, and if it does, she'll probably step on something important. (But hey, it'll create jobs for debtors assigned to clean up the mess!)

Weaknesses:
-Makoto is very immature. She's often referred to as childish or animal-like (fittingly), and it's true. If people go through a lot of trouble for her, she takes it for granted. If she's given responsibilities, she may get distracted and completely ditch them. She spent all the grocery money on meat buns and manga once in canon just minutes after proudly stating that being given the task of getting groceries made her a mature adult. Yeah, no, Makoto.
-Makoto has no memory of her past. She can be more than a little clueless at times and will chase any lead she has.
-Makoto is easily scared and will hide behind people and things or scream and run around in a panic at anything that frightens her.
-Makoto can be easily distracted by or bribed with food.
-Upon either meeting and living happily with Aizawa Yuuichi (should he appear) or giving up on that wish (see: her disappearance from other girls' routes in the game), she will start to mentally revert to an animal and then fade away into nothingness. HOWEVER, as this is related to her debt, this may not apply.
